Summer Hours

This

Is life:

Heat

And an open heaven.

Keen bruise

Throbbing beneath my jeans

Gravel-shod

Aware of every breath expanding my form

Blinking

Bright white

From my eyes

Bright white

Figures of shape and speed -

Swinging arms

Pounding legs

THWACK!

And soaring,

Rippling blue air

A soft thud on the green.

Hours pass.

The sky deepens

The heat thickens;

A breath

Caresses the turf

Bowing green stems

Toward the river.
